Monika Traikov

Recently ran into the work of graphic designer Monika Traikov, and am amazed. Her use of old photographs and often faceless figures manipulated and fragmented speak to themes of identity and memory. Sometimes playful, sometimes haunting, I believe Traikov's images explore the process of remembering, and observing the past through this filter of our own, distorted idea of what the past was.

This quarter I have to complete 30 paintings in ten weeks for my intermediate acrylic class. Kind of  wild idea, but also an exciting challenge. Thank god I already work fast when I paint, and now I don't have to pay attention to paintings I don't like. Just drop it and move on (Hallelujah!) SO! Here are two of my quickest paintings, each done in about 2 hours. The top is on a record (one of the thirty must be on an object) and the other is about 11 x 17 on acrylic paper.

Burning Man Art

63 (4 x 3) cards with a mandala cut from linoleum printing block and stamped over a water color wash and 9 cards with a "Burn" woodcut over the watercolor wash. I am pretty stoked on the final result. A large number of something hand made, that wasn't too much work on my end. Can't wait to hand these little babies out!

printmaking 2011

In my intro to printmaking class this summer, I was inspired to make a print of actress Anna Karina. It's a simple two-run reduction print, with a color extended edition. Of course, being a beginner and all, I forgot to flip the image when I began, so I drew the picture backwards. Nevertheless, I am pretty satisfied with it. And below is my first drypoint print we did on plexiglass on the left, and my first woodcut on the right.
